Circuit Breaker Panel
An electrical circuit breaker panel is the main distribution point of electricity coming into a home. It usually provides between 100 and 200 amps of power depending on your home's load demand. Power comes into your home from the utility company, it flows through an electrical meter to an electrical disconnect and ends up at the main breaker to be distributed through your electrical panel.
In the event of a power outage some homeowners can switch the power source from the utility to a generator to ensure continuous operation of critical appliances like heat in the winter or air conditioning during summer months. The breaker panel in the home is a place most homeowners don't venture very often. If it were not for occasional circuit breaker trips, most would never need to know how it works.
Resetting a tripped breaker is simple, open the breaker panel door, search for the one that has tripped and flip the switch back to the "on" position. However, for more complex electrical problems a professional electrician should always be consulted. Service electricians have considerable skills troubleshooting wiring problems and making repairs. The amount of electricity flowing through your electrical box is huge. Even a small mistake can be serious to your health or very costly for your home.
The amp rating on you panel is broken down like this, a 100A breaker panel is rated at 100 amps. This means the main breaker or fuse is intended to disconnect power if the load exceeds 100 amps on either of the 2 "legs" of the service. The electricity going into the panel OR the electricity demanded from the panel. This is why a breaker will trip if too much demand is placed on the circuit. For instance, if you're running the vacuum while someone else is blow drying their hair and both outlets are on the same circuit, the electrical panel may detect a draw of too much power and trip that circuit breaker.
The basic electric panel hasn't changed much for decades. It has a back feed design, with the main supply cables coming through the back of the panel and connecting to the terminal blocks immediately below the entrance hole, but above the main, neutral and ground bus bars. Installing most breaker boxes is basically the same. The difference between a square d circuit breaker panel and the 200 amp breaker panel is the location of the terminal blocks. Keep in mind that your home may also have a breaker sub panel that is located somewhere else in the house.
Typically a circuit breaker panel costs between $800-$1200 for an existing panel upgrade by an electrician, or $1500-$2500 if a brand new electrical panel install is needed. There are a wide range of circuit breaker panel manufacturers, buying a fuse panel or even relay panel is easily done online or at your local home improvement center.
