I need help figuring out which the color codes on my resistor?!?!?
I'm having a problem with my key for my ignition. My mechanic says its the metal resistor chip on my key. So he had me go to Radio shack and he told me to get 1/4 watt resistors. The guy there gave me a package a assorted resistors, now I'm having a hard time figuring out which resistor I need. So here is where I need help : 1st. I got the resistor on my key and got a read from my multimeter. I set the meter to 20k (OHM). My read was 2.370. what is the color codes i need to find in the package? I think I'm givng you all the information to answer my question, but if not, I can add additional details if you like me to
I've answered this before. Please read carefully.
so you have a 2.4k resistor. Look for a 2.2k, red-red-red as a replacement.
But if you read the value of the resistor IN CIRCUIT, then is could well be an incorrect reading, with other components in parallel affecting the reading.
AND if the resistor is bad, reading it with an ohmmeter will get you the burned out value, not the original, correct value.
But I really doubt that a bad resistor could cause a key to malfunction. First of all, resistors have very good reliability. I can't recall ever in 30 years having a resistor go bad unless it was overloaded and obviously burned.
I think the mechanic is giving you the run around.
