Getting into programing microcontrollers (c or c++)?
I am interested in learning to program microcontrollers, but I don’t know were to start. The basic stamps are kind of expensive, as well as javelins, and I don’t really want to learn assembler. A already have some knowledge in java, but the as I said before javelins are to expensive. I mostly interested in programming stuff in c++ because it’s similar to java, and it is also cheaper then a stamp. I’ve be looking and some pics but I can’t really find a good book on them. 123 microcontrolling for the evil genius looks good but it recommends the pickit 1 which no longer comes with the pic16f684 (I think that’s the number). For my compiler I was thinking of the free! Picc lite as I understand I can program a standard pic in c++ with it . Anyways my fundamental question is what do I need to start? Everything and a good book.

First, WELCOME to the wonderful world of embedded programming!! (and no, I'm not kidding, I've been doing it for more than 20 years and I love it and won't go back to writing desktop applications).
The easiest (and cheapest) kits I've seen are the Rabbit boards by rabbit (www.rabbit.com). Their whole setup is about $200 bucks (as I recall, I did not spend much time on their site). You get the board, the compiler (it is C, not C++, but they may have a C++ version too), cables and power supplies (you don't know how many times I've forgotten to buy these).
They will often have a 2-day class that, if you attend, you get the development kit at no extra cost.
