motorcycle battery electrical problem?
I am restoring a 1983 Honda Magna V45 and when I go to hook up the negative lead on the battery, there are sparks. As a test I connected the positive cable to the battery and connected a 10A ammeter, one side to the motorcycle lead and the other side to the negative terminal on the battery. The reading is well above 10A as the meter flies up to 10A right away. The ignition is turned off obviously I just don't know what the problem is?? I hardly did anything to the electrical system, only disconnected the thermostat, disconnected the two cables on the auxiliary fuel tank, and also the plug on the radiator. As well as unplugged the cable connectors, but those are simple to reconnect (the white plastic plugs that clip in to eachother) I need help desperately because this is the last step until I can try to start it up! Last night I mentioned the starter solenoid as being a remote possibility and guardrailjim has mentioned it tonight and I think he and I might be onto something. You having hooked up the ammeter is making me suspect the solenoid for one very important reason. Something is pulling a good to amps, which is 120 watts, or a load equal to two 60 watt headlights. If it were a true wiring short, more than 10 amps would be drawn, frying the wiring harness. If it was a bad switch somewhere, 10 amps would cause the switch to heat up in a hurry and would be hard to miss. The only thing that can pull 10 amps, not function but not burn up either is the starter motor. 10 amps isn't going to be enough to crank the engine over, but is a small enough amount of current that the starter isn't going to immediately overheat. Eventually it would heat up, but not for a while. As guardrailjim said, disconnect the battery cable at the solenoid and see if the current draw stops. If it is the solenoid, chances are it will get warm or hot if you let the juice run through it for much time at all. Solenoids should not heat up when they are operating correctly.
