how to launch and retrieve boat without power trim feature?

so, my old outboard is heavy and it don't have power trim feature! when trailering i put latch on upper position where it locks in both direction, this way the prop will not hit the ground when i go over a speed hump.
problem come to launching the boat, do i put it on the lower position and then put boat in reverse (rise the lower end) that cause the latch to drop down and engine drop? if thats the case what about retrieving the boat? there is no way i can tilt up the outboard from inside the boat. will it cause the props to grind on the boat ramp?

I would not risk pulling the boat in or out of the water without tilting the motor up. You can cause some serious damage if you hit an obstruction.
This is a common problem on older motors. You didn't state the horsepower of your motor. If it is 100 hp or less, you can buy a manual lever arm that attaches to the top of your engine and makes it easier to tilt the engine up manually. The following link is for such a unit. Although it states for motors up to 75hp, I have used it on a 100hp motor successfully.

The best alternative (if you can afford it) is to purchase an electric power trim and tilt bracket. You have to remove the motor from the boat. Mount the bracket to the boat and then mount the motor on the bracket. You can then trim and tilt the motor up and down by pushing a button. Here's a link for that type of bracket.
