why do you get a beam of light from a tourch, and not from a bulb light in the home.?
The bulb in a conventional torch (as opposed to LED) works exactly the same as a light bulb in the house: it shines light out in (almost) all directions, pretty much equally. However a torch has a curved mirror which takes the light emitted in most of these directions and reflects it back in one direction. This creates a beam of light, as most of the light from the bulb is now going in the same direction. Another aspect of the beam of light from a torch is that usually it's pretty dark when you're using one, whereas a domestic light bulb gives out vastly more light, and therefore the room tends to light up enough that you don't see a beam of light even if there is one (spotlights and downlighters also have reflective mirrors, for example), unless you use a dimmer to reduce the light output sufficiently that the light reflected off the floor and walls isn't enough to hide the original beam.
