how do you test a smd capacitor ? can you use a standard multimeter and if so how do you set it up to test ?
If it's a big capacitor (more than 10 uF), you can sometimes set your multimeter on a high ohms setting, and see if the meter registers a resistance that increases with time. This works better with a mechanical (not DVM) meter, because you can see the needle jump briefly.
Also on big capacitors, you can look for bulging at the top (some manufacturers score their caps on the top with an 'X', and you can see this part distorted), generally indicating the capacitor is marginal to bad, and should be replaced.
For small caps, you usually have to unsolder the cap from the circuit before testing it. Some DVM's have a capacitance setting, I don't know if your meter does. By the way, small SMD capacitors rarely go bad. It would more likely be physical damage that you can see with a magnifier, if anything.
