Preparing Your Car For An MOT Test
Making sure your car passes its annual MOT test is really important, as you legally can’t drive it if it fails. Our guide gives you some useful advice on helping your car pass its MOT. The interior of the car is one area to pay attention to. You should make sure that your car horn works and that all the seats have properly working seatbelts. To pass the MOT, all the seats also need to be able to lock securely in an upright position, so check to make sure.
It’s also important that you spend some time getting the exterior of your car into top shape, as well. Your car will fail the MOT if there is any sign of rust on the body, so it can be a good idea to regularly wax it to prevent it from getting damaged and keep it away from bad weather if necessary. Also make sure there aren’t any chips in the front or rear windscreens or the windows and check to make sure your windscreen wipers work before the MOT.
A really important part of the MOT is the brake test, so it’s really important your car’s brakes are in perfect working order. Make sure to check your brake pads to ensure they’re not too worn. Also make sure you have enough brake fluid before sending your car for the MOT and change the fluid regularly. You can also keep brakes in good condition by making sure you use them properly, such as by following speed limits as this will reduce the risk of slamming the brakes on too quickly.
Also remember to check your tires regularly to make sure they’re up to MOT standards. In particular, you need to make sure the tread on the tires is at least 1.6mm. If it’s less than this, you’ll have to change the tires or else risk failing the MOT. Also ensure that your tires are inflated to the correct pressure. Also important is checking to see there are no slow punctures or other damage that may cause your car to fail the tire test.
Lastly, you should also make time to check all the lights on your car on a regular basis as the car will fail the MOT test if not all of them are working. This means you need to change any failed light bulbs as soon as you find out that they’ve stopped working. Lights to check include the headlamps, rear lights, registration plate light, fog lamps, hazard lights, brake lights and indicator lights. Keeping them all in working order will definitely help your car pass its MOT.
