Tarot Card Readings Give More Than Entertainment

Tarot card readings can be found at many major festivals across America. They set up tents next to caricaturists, mimes, face painters and musicians. For some, it's an enlightening introspective journey that they wouldn't otherwise indulge in. For others, it's just a night out with the girls. For the event organizers, it's a big draw. Reading tarot cards is nothing new, of course; it's been around since the 1400s, experts say. However, it seems the "occult" stigma that the tarot cards picked up in the 1800s has faded, allowing tarot card readers a more mainstream status.

So, what's the fascination behind live tarot cards? Are people losing faith, looking for answers, or just plain curious? "People come by because they are looking for some kind of direction," said Dawna SuMaria, one of the more experienced tarot card readers at the Hawaiian Islands' 12th annual Psychic Faire in Lihu'e. Miss SuMaria charges $25 for 15 minutes and she has been reading for nearly 50 years. Another who does tarot card readings, Erik Taylor, said that self-actualization is a big part of his readings as well. "It's about helping people get through their everyday things and be the best possible person they can be," Taylor said. Like a mirror, he reflects back to them so they "see the scene as it really is." The Psychic Faire is just one of many spiritual events happening this year.

Ma Prem Usha, one of India's well known tarot card readers, explains why tarot card readings are picking up in popularity in her country. "The Tarot has been evolved for spiritual growth and this should be a person's essential reason for using it. It gets you in touch with your strengths and weaknesses at the four levels of consciousness: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual." She adds that the tarot cards allow you to "change energies, look at situations from another viewpoint," eventually overcoming obstacles and progressing.

"Everyone is psychic to some degree, just as everyone is born with some degree of musical talent or sports ability," Kellye Crockett, an experienced tarot card reader, said. "We can develop our sixth sense in many ways, including regular meditation, in-depth study of an esoteric art and spending time alone in nature, just to name a few." Crockett said the ability to read tarot cards improves with practice and having read over 10,000 tarot card readings over a 15-year time span, you could say she is skilled. "The tarot can tell you everything" she adds with a smile, "sometimes more than you want to know."
