Temporary Insanity---I disconnected all the wires in a junction box and now I have four shielded cables, three wire nuts, and nine loose wires. I have 1) black and white wires coming from the circuit breaker, 2) black and white wires leading to an ordinary basement light with a pull chain, 3) black and white wires leading to a switch at the top of the stairs, and 4) black, white and red wires leading to a light at the bottom of the stairs. You can turn that light off from the switch at the top of the stairs or by pulling the chain, but to turn it on, both must be on. In other words there are two switches with four possible combinations. on + on = on. off + off = off. on + off = off. off + on = off. It wouldn't do to just connect all the black wires together and all the white wires together. I would still have the red wire and an extra wire nut. HELP!
Use caution when taking advice from some of these people on here, you might end up finding your ass down the road from a huge electrical shock!!
