Capacitors hooked up to mains?
If I turned off my main 200A breaker and hooked up a very large capacitor (over 1 farad) in series to my two hot leg main lugs while the power was out, what would happen when the power came back on? 240V single phase.
BTW, I have no intention of doing this, but I have a bet with a guy at work. He says that it will damn near blow the pot transformer off the pole, I say it won't do a thing. I can't figure out the circuit diagram, so I'm having problems. Heh, I need to go re-read Ohm's law.
if it is a D/C capacitor you are in trouble and will blow anyway.
A/C rated capacitors have to be rated at or near the same voltage and cannot be ran in such a manner that they build a bridge rectifier and it comes back as a d/C circuit with square waves and A/C is a back and forth sine wave.
Ohms law is different is D/C voltage as applied to A/C voltage.
Don't do it Good Luck
