Fire Extinguishers - Pick The Appropriate Kind For The Job
It is quite common that someone considering the purchase of fire extinguishers will buy the wrong class of extinguisher for the specific type of fire they are attempting to protect themselves against. There are some specific factors to consider when buying fire extinguishers. The two most important factors to decide on are the class of the fire extinguisher and the type of possible fire.Each different type of Fire Extinguisher has it’s own class designation: A, B, C, D, and K.
Class A Fire Extinguishers are the right choice for extinguishing materials that leave ash when caught on fire. Some examples of this include, paper products, clothing and fabric, rubber and various plastics. The label of the Class A Extinguisher will have a green triangle with a letter A in it along with a burning garbage can picture. The classification of A can be represented by the word “Ash” which makes it easy to remember.
Class B Fire Extinguishers are used for extinguishing ignited liquids like engine fuels and other similar flammable liquid chemicals. A red square with the letter B in the center along with a flaming puddle is depicted on the label of Class B Fire Extinguishers. The B Classification can be thought of as representing a Barrel of liquid.
The Class C Extinguisher is made specifically for stopping electrical fires. Electrical fires would includeelectric motors, circuit breaker panels, outlet boxes and switches and electrically powered tools. The burning electrical socket and plug on the label of the Class C makes it easily distinguishable. The “C” can be though of as the word “Current” as in electrical current.
The Class D Extinguisher is for putting out burning metal and metal alloys. Examples of such flammable metals are magnesium, titanium, potassium and sodium as well as orgaonmetallic reagents. This is a particularly high temperature fire that reacts violently with water. The label of the Class D Extinguisher has the letter D in the middle of a yellow star and utilizes a dry powder to extinguish metal fire flames.
Fires in the kitchen are doused by the Class K Fire Extinguisher. Kitchen fires frequently involve cooking oil, grease and fat. This extinguisher has a picture of a flaming frying pan on it.
The above listed fire extinguishers may be found with a single class rating or multiple fire class ratings such as ABC or BC.
