Color change fluorite is one kind of gem
As famous as fluorites are, color change fluorites are pretty recent. Fluorites are considered one of the most precious gems in the world and stands second to quartz only. It is a collector’s prize and is naturally bright and stunning. It needs very little work done on it and can be used in its natural form. It is one of those gems that are precious and affordable at the same time; a rare combination.
Fluorite known for its usage as a precious gem also is famous as a flux used in refining and manufacturing steel and iron. This gem has found its name also from its special property that it melts easily (thus, its usage as flux) and is aptly named after the Latin word Fluere which translates t mean ‘to flow”. Fluorites are found in a wide range of colors but color change fluorites are a recent discovery. From the records of Pliny the elder we have been able to discover that fluorite was prevalent and famous during the Roman emperor Nero’s reign. He was said to have purchased a very precious fluorite during the early first century AD. However the findings of fluorite that dates back this far is very rare because Fluorite by itself is a very soft gem and cannot have survived the years.
Speaking of its texture and durability is worth mentioning here that if you own a fluorite ornament it is best cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Also, thanks to its soft nature it is not as widely used to fashion ornaments for mass commercial use. Fluorite more often than not finds its right place in a collector’s shelf. Fluorite is found in a wide range of colors. Fluorite in its pink, blue and green shades is brilliant and enhances the beauty of ornaments tenfold. Recently color change fluorites have been hitting the markets and they turn from a pleasant shade of green to a brilliant shade of purple.
