Who Should You Seek Advice From When Buying PC Hardware?
I had one of the worst sales experiences I've ever been subject to in one of the new Currys-PC World stores the other day. I wanted a small laptop for word processing and browsing so I could take my work on the daily commute. I traipsed around the Laptop aisles for a while looking quizzical in the vein hope that one of the drones that patrolled the shop floor would come over and offer me assistance. No one came to my aid for 20 minutes.
In this day an age, this total lack of customer service is unacceptable. This is not an isolated incident either, I clearly remember my last poor retail experience in the chain, I was on a mission as a mystery shopper. My task was to wait for a member of staff to offer help, then ask about some PC Components. Once again, the staff barely noticed me, and failed to offer any help.
Even when you do ask staff for assistance in one of these stores, not just PC World but Dixons, Currys and the other big name consumer electronics retailers, the staff don’t have the first clue what they’re on about. I’d bet half of them can’t tell a cheap hard drive from a HDMI cable. This is a real problem because the market for computer hardware is so vast and complicated that most consumers are going to need help at some point.
I believe that specialist retails are the way forward, yes they are more expensive but I’d rather pay a bit more and know I was getting the correct item than trust the spotty teenager in PC World. It doesn't matter if you shop on or offline, customer service is equally importance and staff that have good experience and product know how make all the difference.
