Hydrogen Power For Cars - Essential Now And For The Future
As gas prices continue to rise to unprecedented levels people are scratching their heads looking for an alternative to traditional fossil fuels to power their vehicles. Indeed, highly funded organizations like the energy commission are looking into possibilities, as are the average person in the street that look at conversion kits for hydrogen to install in their cars.
Hydrogen fuel cells look certain to provide a credible alternative to gasoline as a vehicle's fuel source in the near future. Hydrogen for cars will not only provide the chance to explore new energy sources; it will also open up better potential for us to improve how we travel overall.

Typically, to refine and produce gasoline, a refinery would use around three hundred billion gallons of water, which is in itself becoming a cause for concern given that water is a valuable and not exactly renewable resource. The similar amount of hydrogen would require only a third of the quantity of water to produce, this is a saving which is hard to ignore.
The gallon of gasoline compared to hydrogen would cost twice as much but would offer less car efficiency than hydrogen. Hydrogen fuel also decreases engine operating temperatures, all but eliminating emissions as well as the unwanted carbon footprint.
The main stumbling block to producing hydrogen fueled vehicles on a mass scale is the lack of available hydrogen fuel. Or more pertinently, the infrastructure to deliver hydrogen fuel to the consumer. The near future might see people using a home hydrogen refueling sation to replenish their car but as of this moment this scenario is out of reach of most people.
If vehicles were to run only on electricity that was created via an on board hydrogen fuel cell then it would liberate many of the next generation car designers. Car designs would evolve in new directions as the limitations imposed on a vehicle due to a large combustion enegine would not apply.
Typically, the engine and the controls to run the engine would be lighter and smaller. Some current limitations are allowing for a heat-producing engine and bulky floorboard configurations which are necessary for drive line equipment.
With governments creating policy and many big corporations in industry investing large sums of money into hydrogen generation as a fuel, the car manufacturing industry will change markedly. Hydrogen will be more availalbe to the average car owner in the near future as the infrastructure to deliver it is developed.
Environmentally friendlier and more cost effective fuel for our cars benefits both for the individual and the wider population. As the increase in gas prices sees no end in sight, the advancement in developing hydrogen fueling cars and the infrastructure to support them will continue at an increasingly faster pace.
