The Not So Colorful World Of A Dog
In the eyes of a dog the world is in white and in various shades of grey. This is due to the fact that dogs are believed to have no ability to see colors. Dogs are highly valued for their ultrasensitive senses. A dog's sensitive scenting and hearing abilities is what makes them outstanding guard dogs. Sighthounds are highly valued for their keen vision that keeps a prey in sight. One of the advantages of dogs over humans is the ability to see well in the dark . Humans therefore can sleep soundly at night, unmindful of intruders as long as there is a dog is in the house.
Nature has endowed our furry friends with very sensitive senses but the ability to see colors in the same way humans can was left out. Dogs can actually see colors but in a different way than what we humans can do. A study on canine vision conducted in the University of California has proven the fact that dogs can see colors but their vision as compared to human's vision is less detailed. Due to the dog's less detailed vision, a new red chew toy may not be appreciated as in the dog's eye the color of the toy will either be black or grey.
It has always been claimed that the genetics of dogs is similar to humans. Similar to humans, a dogs eye has special cells called cone photoreceptors that controls color perception by catching the light. However, while humans have three cone photoreceptors, dogs only have two. The three cones in the central part of the human retina give humans 100% full range vision while the two cone types in a dog's eye deliver only about 20 % range of color vision. This makes the dog's vision about six times less inferior than human vision.
In the eyes of Fido the rainbow colors would be blue, light blue, grey, light yellow, brownish yellow and dark grey instead of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. This means that in the eyes of a dog, the world is basically colored in blue, grey and yellow. Given the dog's limited vision for color, it is quite surprising that our loyal companions can distinguish the subtle alterations of colors that creates different shades of blue and violets.
The yellow pigmentation in the human eyes that blocks short wavelengths and reduces the eyes' sensitivity to blue and violet eyes is the reason why humans do not have the ability to distinguish the slight changes in the shades of violets and blues. Dogs do not have this yellow pigmentation thus they can distinguish the blue and violet shades.
