Discovering the Beautiful Islands of Hawaii
The 50th state in the United States is made up of a string of islands collectively known as Hawaii, but it often causes some confusion because the largest of the islands in the string is also known as Hawaii. To make it clear which island is being referred to, many simply call Hawaii island the big island. The Hawaii islands are in reality the effect of underground lava formation starting in the floor of the sea and building upwards until the magma spread above the depths of the Pacific Ocean.
There are eight inhabited islands in the chain of the islands of Hawaii with some others tipping their peaks out of the water, but due to size and resources are not inhabited. Nihau, the north west-most island of the chain is the smallest of the populated island and the big island is located to the furthermost southeast link in the chain of the Hawaii islands. Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu as well as there are Hawaii vacation specials for holidaymakers, selected by former ruler King Kamehamea due to the closeness of the natural harbor, nowadays well-known as Honolulu Harbor.
Other lands in the Hawaii islands include Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and Kahoulawe and also including travel to Maui. Transportation between these islands is provided by boat or air with the bigger islands having airports capable of accepting large commercial airplane and others smaller, commuter aircraft.
With the islands of Hawaii beginnings traced back to barren lava growth, it is hypothesized that the nature helped bring life to volcanic land by wind currents, in the water and by flying birds. When the first human habitant came for Polynesia in about 500 A.D., animals and plants had already claimed the island and recent conservation methods have insured the went on growth and good home ground for the native species.
The Hawaii islands became an significant strategy for the Air Force and U.S. Navy, still before Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. While still home to U.S. military bases, which provide a large population with civilian job opportunities, it also features the memorials for the soldiers who perished in the attack.
Hawaii islands population has grown enormously, especially since becoming a state in 1959, as the census in 1910 registered a population of about 154,000. Inhabitants have increased to over 1.2 million in 2000. Hawaii vacation travel is a stunning trip to the only U.S. state entirely surrounded by the sea and is located nearly 1,500 miles away from mainland at the Pacific coast of California.
