Both DMM and the oscilloscope measure voltage, why do we need both?
Both a digital multimeter and the oscilloscope measure voltage, why do we need both? I just started learning about them and I don't really see why both are necessary. Can someone please explain?
The DMM is smaller (portability), cheaper and simpler to operate. It is generally more precise in its measurement (for what it is suited too). Another point is that most oscilloscopes measure relative to ground, while a DMM is isolated, floating, so can measure between any two points within reason. This makes it more difficult for an oscilloscope to measure some things, and a range of special probes might be needed in some work fields.
The main reason for using an oscilloscope is because it plots the waveform against time. It gives much greater insight into the operation of most electronic systems, but it would be a bit unattractive for electrical work on house wiring, where safety, ruggedness, portability, isolation come to mind. More expensive bench multimeters can be very precise, so every electronics lab needs one.
