Truck Insurance Options For Independent Truck Drivers
Independent truck drivers understand the importance of proper truck insurance coverage. Their lives depend on keeping their trucks roadworthy. They also need the peace of mind that they won't be burdened with outrageous damage and repair costs in the event of an accident.
In addition to the primary liability coverage that is legally required for all commercial vehicles, there are a few other types of truck insurance coverages to consider.
Physical Damage Insurance
This is probably the most important type of coverage for independent owner/operators. It ensures that damage to your personal property will be covered, regardless of fault. This includes times when your truck is non-operational and is damaged by fire, vandalism, or theft.
Trailer Insurance
Independent drivers typically don't own or use their own trailers for hauls, but some do. A common practice in the truck industry is trailer interchange, whereby two drivers exchange trailers and finish each other's haul to save on costs.
Trailer interchange insurance covers the trailer while it is in the possession of the other driver.
Motor carriers can also get blanket trailer insurance coverage to protect their owned trailers as part of their truck insurance.
Cargo Insurance
Cargo insurance is not always necessary for independent owner/operators. It covers the cost of damage to goods while in possession of the driver during transit. The motor carrier who contracts you may provide this to you, but if not, it is available to independents to purchase on their own.
