Circuit Breakers Save Lives
Circuit breakers have been around for a long time but nobody really realises why all of these electrical components actually come in useful.
Brief History
The idea itself came from Edison in 1879 so the circuit breaker idea has actually been around for a very long time indeed. The master himself Edison wanted to protect circuits from short-circuiting and overloading.
What They Do
Most circuit breakers have things in common and it doesnt matter if they are different sizes or even different voltage types.
The circuit breaker must detect a fault condition which is usually done within the breaker enclosure when it comes to the smaller circuit breakers. Once the fault has been found, contacts within the breaker will open up to stop the circuit. Some of the smaller ones can be manually used to shut off the electricity at a fast rate.
Once the current gets to a stage where it has to be interrupted an arc must be generated and the contained. This then means that the gap that is supposed to be there can carry on.
Saving Lives
These circuit breakers work to actually save lives of many people every single year. The problem occurs in the normal home when someone tries to plug in too many appliances to one location. With too many appliances plugged in to one place it can be very easy for a fire to start. If a fire breaks out it could of course burn down the entire house and sometimes this can be avoided if you had that important circuit breaker. It will cut off the electricity before the wire has a chance to burn through.
So although you may not think all of those mil spec cables are important it would seem that they are.
