is it a code violation to have equipment stored in a dedicated electrical distribution room?
in a room housing switchgear, xfmr's, and main panels, is it considered a code violation to store equipment for storage? also, is it a code violation for stacked boxes to be covering a small motor control enclosure door?(just 2 motor starters are in it, no controls)
Article 110-26 of the NEC covers working spaces and spaces about electrical equipment. There has to be a working space for any equipment that has to be maintained, and or worked on.
Equipment can only be serviced by qualified people. Articel 110-26 states that a nominal voltage from 151 trhu 600 volts must have 3 - 4 feet depending on your local code actually. this would include front and sides if not attached or near a wall.
As far as motor controls this is covered in article 384 of the NEC as well. Most of this equipment should be behind a locked door to only qualified people not every one. Motor controls if being used should be in a dedicated area but they are not always because of older building codes.
I would say if you are in a serious situation with this call your local fire marshall they enforce the codes with clearances in this manner.
