Why is my in-wall volume control knob (attenuator) vibrating/rattling with the music?
I just installed an in-wall volume control knob to control 2 speakers in my ceiling. The knob/speakers are fed by a Denon AV surround receiver AVR-3805. When a loud song with bass plays, the volume knob rattles/vibrates with the beats, even when the speakers are turned all of the way down. Why is this? How can I fix it?
Your attenuator (volume control) is probably some type of inductor (coil) and when the signal flows through it it becomes slightly magnetic. Something in the electrical box that holds the attenuator must be made of steel and is attracted to the magnetism. This is actually how speakers work too - current flowing through a coil that surrounds a magnet causes the coil to move. The coil is attached to the speaker cone.
The first thing to check is to make sure there is nothing loose in the electrical box. If it looks OK, you might want to consider changing it out for a plastic junction box. You might also want to call the manufacturer of the attenuator to see if this is a common problem and maybe they have a fix for it.
