can you identify these old japanese pot items?
I have two items. both pot. i think.
well they are made from clay.
they are pretty rough and i think pretty old.
one is like a stand. it is circular, flat on the top and has 5 small feet.
it is about the size of a cup stand but i was led to believe it was not for that purpose.
the second item, I believe is meant to go with the first somehow.
it is also circular but has two identical raises on each side. in the centre of the raises, there is a hole but the hole does not penetrate through to the other side.
the old man that sold these to me spoke no english and i spoke no japanese. but i got teh impression he was describing either a furnace or fire and that these items would be used in front of this furnace or fire.
I hope you can help me identify these items, I have searched google but can't find any site that lists random japanese items of yore.

This would be a lot easier if you could post a photo, but I believe what you are describing is a simple donabe (casserole). The raises on the sides are most likely a sort of handle (or handle part), and you are missing the actual handle part, most likely a steel curved bar that fits into the holes you mentioned.
I believe the other piece is nothing more than a trivet or stand upon which to place the hot casserole.
Rice could be cooked in a donabe on a hibachi or over an open fire on a grill, then placed on its stand. By keeping the donabe close to the fire, one could have warm rice for hours.

Add: Much better with the photo! Writing descriptions of this sort of object is difficult at best. Now I'm thinking what you have is a type of tool or utensil. It could even be a farming implement. I don't believe the two pieces do go together, but who really knows!
I suggest you visit some decent art museums that feature Japanese archeological finds. You might even speak with a curator. Bring the photos with you.
