Uses of Pressure, Milliamp and RTD Calibrators
Instrument calibration is a necessary and important part of any instrument system. The accuracy of the information produced by any instrument is dependent on it.
Pressure, temperature, current, voltage, density, etc. are some of the most widely measured variables. Pressure sets critical conditions for boiling, chemical reactions, distillation, extrusion, vacuuming, and conditioning of air. Any mistake in measurement of pressure can create major safety, quality, and productivity problems. Low pressure can create productivity issues, and very high pressure inside a sealed environ can cause an explosion. Hence, precise and regular pressure calibration in transmitters, switches, etc. is necessary. Pressure gauges, pressure sensors, pneumatic hand pumps, etc. are used for pressure calibration. Pressure calibration is done accurately by using internal sensors or external pressure modules. A pressure source may be provided by a self-contained internal pressure pump, or an external source such as an accessory pump or a pressure bottle or regulator.
RTD Calibrator is a handheld tool for calibrating RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) transmitters, including most pulsed transmitters. A large number of RTDs can be simulated or measured, in units of °C or °F. An RTD Calibrator also simulates and measures resistance in units of ohms. It does not source and measure simultaneously. RTD calibrators are widely used for calibration of thermocouples because the resistance that an electrical conductor (e.g. the Platinum element) exhibits to the flow of an electric current is related to its temperature.
A milliamp calibrator or mA calibrator sources and measures the loop DC current. In its source mode, it feeds known mA signal to the input of any instrument. The current that the milliamp calibrator feeds the mA (0-20 mA) is continuously variable. In its measure mode, it measures external milliamps. The milliamp calibrator can be used to calibrate recorders, digital indicators, stroke valves or any other instruments that get their input from a 4 to 20 mA loop. It combines 0 to 24 mA Source, mA Meter, two-wire Transmitter Simulator and DC Volt Meter in a single compact unit.
Some of the major industries where calibrators are used are aerospace for calibration in civil aviation and military aircraft; oil and gas, wind and nuclear power in power stations and high-voltage distribution grids; automotive and transport; electronic spare parts; telecom for fiber networks; and medical for calibration of equipment used in diagnosis.
