Can you convert a halogen lamp to a multiple LED lamp and still get comparable luminous flux?
I want to convert an old torchiere-style 300-watt halogen lamp to a lower-power LED lamp, but it looks like in order to get as much brightness I'd have to pack about 12 high-power LED elements in the fixture, not to mention trying to keep the LEDs cool. Anyone have experience with this kind of project?
I kinda figured heat dissipation would be a problem. I might be able to build in some hefty heat sinks and a small, quiet fan.
as to the light distribution problem, i've found some high-power LED elements that have a pretty wide angle, and for the fixture I'm using, i don't really need 180 degree coverage; it's a torchiere lamp, so it's got it's own reflector, plus it's made to shine straight up at the ceiling.
Your biggest problem will be heat dissipation. High power LEDs dump a lot of heat down their cathode leads. If you don't keep the LED's cool enough they will degrade and die early.
So you need to design for heat sinks & air flow; which brings up the next problem. Halogen bulbs are designed to run hot, so the fixture probably wasn't designed with air flow/heat disapation in mind. So figure on modifiing the fixture for improved air flow.
