Mosfet-How to use to switch on an LED?
I'm using a breadboard to try and make a mosfet switch on and off an LED powered by a 9v battery. I am basing my experimentation off of the assumption that when the black part of the body of the mosfet is aceing me, the order of the pins from left to right is gate, drain, source. (If that's wrong please tell me.) So I have two voltage sources. I have my variabe DC power supply set at 5 volts, and I hook up the positive to the gate interupted by a switch. I hook up the negative lead of that source to the middle or drain pin. Now for the power supply driving the LED. I hook up the positive side of the 9v battery to the source pin(far right pin). I hook up my LED, oriented correctly, to the drain pin and back to the negative of the 9v battery. The LED stays on the entire time, whether the switch to the gate is on or not. What I assume MOSFETs are supposed to do is only turn on when the voltage is being applied to the gate. What am I doing wrong?
I think you need to add a resistor to pull the gate to ground when the switch is open, in order to ensure that the MOSFET turns off. Here's a diagram showing the resistor R:

+Vdd is your +9V battery terminal
-0V common is your 9V battery negative terminal
Vin+ is the output of the switch. The switch connects to +Vdd.
The flywheel diode is not needed since you are driving an LED.
R is not critical. I'd pick 100Kohm. Or 22K to 500K.
