Very frustrated with electronics/soldering issue... help?
I took apart my monitor and was using a 15-watt RadioShack soldering iron (15 watts is what people on here told me to use for resoldering transistors inside an LCD monitor).
But now the guy I bought replacement transistors from is telling me I should be using a Hakko 926 or 936 soldering iron. Now, these seem to be 60-watt irons, and he said these are best because the heat needs to be high enough to heat the leads on the transistors quickly -- that sustained, low heat would fry them.
Problematically, it seems like the least amount I could get one of these for is on ebay $60 (with shipping), and I will never need to use this again!
So my question is: what do you suggest? Is there a cheaper way to handle this? (OBVIOUSLY, it would be easier to buy a new monitor and save myself the headache, but I don't really want to be out $200!)
There is a change in soldering iron tip temperature due to the use of silver solder for RoHS compliance.
Soft soldering (63% tin and 37% lead = 63Sn/37Pb) melts at 180-185°C.
"Hard soldering" or "silver soldering" has a melting point over 450 °C.
Now notice the Hakko 936 is variable (both) temperatures in the range 200-480 °C for older 63Sn/37Pb soft solder *and* the newer silver soldering RoHS boards.
So the newer electronics will need a hotter tip. So 15 watts was the correct answer for soft soldering, but any work on newer boards will need the 60 watts. That accounts for the different answers you were getting.
On the LCD monitor look for the RoHS logo for silver solder compliance to determine your correct soldering iron for your application.
Now, what you need for an iron is just dependent upon the type of work you will be doing. You will find many years of use with your 15 watt iron.
