Easy Ways to Pimp Your Scalextric
Racing Scalextric cars is growing in popularity as each new generation discovers the fun and excitement of slot car racing. Scalextric enthusiasts soon start to look for ways to enhance the performance of their cars and systems. Here are just a handful of techniques that will help your cars to literally fly around the track.
The same principles apply to slot cars as well as F1 racing cars and rally cars. To get more speed you can improve the engine, use more appropriate tires to get better traction and adjust the weight and weight distribution. Optimising Scalextric cars can be very educational.
Let's first think about the Scalextric car's engine. Of course they don't use petrol engines they use tiny little motors and these can be replaced. There are some high performance Scalextric motors that will give you some significant speed enhancements. Changing the motor will immediately give you a significant improvement in speed.
But increased speed can mean that your car will tend to fly off the track when it encounters a bend. You can help your car to stay on the track with an appropriately positioned magnet. Many modern cars come fitted with these magnets but you might like to upgrade to a stronger magnet to help your car stick to the track.
The next improvement you might like to make to your car is new tires. Better grip with the track will help your car to fly around the track.
So you now have a fully pimped out Scalextric car ready to break records. But what about the track? There are a few simple tweaks that can make all the difference. I suggest that you try this on just one of your two tracks first so that you can compare with the unmodified track.
Start by cleaning the Scalextric track. Dirt, dust and moisture on the track will inevitably result in low friction and maybe even some wheel spin. The next thing to do is thoroughly clean your slot. Slotted track naturally accumulates dust and debris. This will obviously slow the progress of your car. Keeping your slots free of dust and debris will make major improvements to your system.
Don't overlook your electrical system as ensuring all your connections are as good as they can be will bring performance enhancements. Clean all the electrical connectors, the slotted track and the contacts on your car.
By now your car should be breaking speed limits as it whizzes aroung the track. Now you're ready to find a worthy opponent for a race.
