Rooibos Or “Red Bush”
Rooibos, sometimes called “redbush tea” or “red tea” is a South African plant used to make a steeped (usually hot) drink that is increasing in popularity. The beverage is produces from the dried leaves, which have the appearance of small, red pine needles, of the native plant Aspalathus linearis. Although similar to tea in many respects, the Rooibos is not in fact tea as it is its own species of plant unrelated to the tea plant (Camellia sinensis).
Aspalathus linearis is only found in the Western Cape of South Africa, and is native to the mountainous Cederburg region. Rooibos plants were originally found high in the mountains and brought down from high altitudes in bags or baskets by natives to be sun-dried and crushed for use. Rooibos has been consumed in South Africa for generations, but has only relatively recently been introduced to the rest of the world.
As the price of tea rose steadily in the 18th century, Dutch South African settlers began to drink Rooibos as an inexpensive local alternative. In 1772 Carl Thunberg, a botanist visiting from Sweden, became interested in Rooibos as a local agricultural phenomenon. 150 years later, in the 1930s a local doctor names le Fras Nortier persuaded locals to gather seeds from the mountains to attempt to cultivate the plant on the flat farmland closer to the town and cape with some success. It was a Russian immigrant called Ginsberg, though, who was instrumental in promoting the commercial growing and export of Rooibos to Europe as an exotic delicacy, paving the way for today’s international Rooibos market.
Rooibos is thought to have excellent health benefits, although only some of them have been substantiated. It is true that it’s an excellent source of antioxidants (even more than tea!) and also contains iron, calcium, and other minerals, as well as phenolic compounds.
Plain red Rooibos has a lightly sweet taste and a faint flavor of red fruits. The vast majority of commercially available Rooibos is of this “red” variety, and indeed both the plant and the resultant liquid are bright red-orange in color. Unoxidized (“green”) Rooibos is also produced, although much harder to find, and it has a more vetegal, grass-like aroma and mild taste. Rooibos also blends well, and is sometimes found offered with other flavors such as fruits, spices, or sweeteners (like vanilla or toffee).
Preparing Rooibos is simple, and the process is almost exactly identical to making black tea. Add boiling water (spring water or filtered water is best) to the Rooibos leaves, either in a bag or, if loose, in an infuser. Rooibos should be steeped somewhat longer than tea, though, about 5-10 minutes, so cover or insulate the steeping vessel or cup to retain the heat. Rooibos is delicious straight, and also traditionally consumed with lemon and honey or sugar.
