what is with the time period for current readings on a multimeter?

in physics lab we have left multimeters that are set on volts and current attached to the circuit for long periods of time and didnt have problems.

but now im seeing this 15 sec intervals and such for current readings in some multimeters. what is up with that? does this mean i can leave a multimeter attached anymore like we did in lab?

here is a link to a multimeter that has a link to the manual that states its current info. sorry lol

CouId could not find the specifications on your link.
I Googled it, it can measure up to 20 amps on AC or DC.
The link below will give you all of the specifications.

http://www.szxclg.com/s02/product/2009/06/18/7218675.html

No time limit was given for amperage measurements.

From practical experience with many multimeters, if you are in the lower end,
say 5 amps or less, you will not hurt the multimeter by continuously measuring current

You could contact the seller on ebay and have them read the owner's manual.

I found a website where you can down load the owner's manual. It is on the left side of the page below the photo of the meter.

http://www.uni-trend.com/UT71A.html

I downloaded it.

http://www.uni-trend.com/manual2/UT71AB%20Eng%20Manual.pdf

On page 33 it says:

"When the measured current is less than or equal to 5A, continuous measurement is allowed.

When the measured current is between 5A-10A, continuous measurement is not to exceed 10 seconds and wait an interval of 15 minutes before the next current measurement."
