From Jewellery Designer to Trophy Designer!
I had the pleasure of being approached by Liz Kop, from the charity Sustrans, to design and make a trophy for their 2009 Virtual Bike Race. Although this was obviously a departure from the usual jewellery making, I'm always keen to flex my artistic muscles!
The brief was that the design had to be a more exciting alternative to "a standard cup trophy or glass trophy - which is not very inspiring", and it "would ideally reflect the county Devon, something to do with cycling (as a form of transport not a lycra sport) and have the name of the school, Virtual Bike Race, Bike It 2009" included.
Once I had done a few sketches, Liz and I agreed on the final design and I set to work. If you take a look at my site via the links below, you'll notice that the centre of the shield is a bicycle hub, which in keeping with the green message of Sustrans, was salvaged from a local reclamation yard. The 'spokes' not only suspend the hub in a traditional shield shape, but also depict the devon flag with their colour.
Once the trophy was soldered, polished and painted, and the winning school established, Liz asked me if I wouldn't mind going along to the award assembly at Clyst Heath Primary School. Not a keen public speaker, I was nervous at first to say the least! It was a lovely afternoon though and the children were obviously very proud of their achievement. The local press were even there!

It was extremely fulfilling to be able to make an artistic contribution to a good cause, and to feel that the art was truly valued and an important part of the whole proceedings - Wouldn't it be great if more charities and even corporations supported local art?
