Why rating of Transformer or a an Alternator is in KVA instead in KW?
In alternating current(AC) circuits the product of voltage and current is called volt-ampere, kVA is a 1000 VA. On the other hand for direct current(DC) circuits, the product of the two is watts. Since the conductors used in wiring the coils are limited by their current ratings, the rating of AC machines are in kVA in general while the rating of DC machines are in kW.
Kilowatt however is also used for heating devices such as stoves and flatirons even for AC applications. The reason is kVA has two components, real power and reactive power. While real power is the component used to produce heat or do work, the reactive component is required to supply the magnetising power needed by some electrical loads. In vector format, kVA is the vector with kW as the real component and kVAR as the y-component. Heating devices does not require magnetizing currents.
