Not paying a debt may lead you to be sued in civil court, but it is never a criminal matter. Although I do believe at one time there were debtor's prisons in the US.

Also, just so you understand, receiving a letter form a law firm threatening to sue you is not the same as being sued. In fact, it may be illegal for them to threaten this if they do not intend to do so. Check the statute of limitations in your state to see if they are expired.
