Technical Analysis Explained And Profit Targets Setting By 3 Different Methods
Once you are in a trade the question quickly rears its head : How and when do you leave with a profit? Setting targets has to be one of the most important elements of your trading scheme, and this is the subject of the next article in our series Technical Analysis Explained.
Objects can be found on time (I'll keep doing the trade for 3 weeks ) or found on technically (I'll keep doing the trade until my slow moving average crosses over my faster moving average) or found on profit (I'll stop when I make the open profit of $1000 ), or based on price (I'll stop of the trade when it get to the certain price .)
Of the 3 ways each one has some gains and losses. Technical exits are mostly available and remove the element of private judgment , however work well only in effective trends , cause losses in the crowd, and nearly always leave huge amount of money on the table . Time-based tools are helpful at times but just as often are net losers , and so can not be seriously considered as a single implement. Profit-based exits are able to train a trader to make frequent profits but what happens when the trade keeps going far above your pre-determined exit point ? This violates one of the basic rules of trading: run as soon as you win .
The greatest means of quitting is to set price targets but only when these are soundly based in the market structure and show the market's existing support and {resistance matrix}. If your plan of trading {takes into account} the natural support and resistance of the market then your target will be good and the opportunities of yours of taking out all that the market offers is far higher then with arbitrarily chosen, fixed-dollar profit targets (which attend to be driven by emotion) or a technical moving average tool (which by definition is compelled to leave a lot of money on the desk ).
How are you going to aim profit targets according to market structure instead of an arbitrary dollar objectives? For somebody it is not an easy question however for the trader who has developed an understanding of multiple time period structure and the ability to project current support and resistance levels forward in the future , setting targets is easily done . The simplest technique is to {use your higher time-period support} and resistance levels ( it should normally be one time-period higher than your trading time-period), and to direct your targets at the next logical assist or resistance level beyond the current price.
Technical analysis explained as follows: Suppose you are day-trading the S&P E-mini contract. You're using a five minutes chart and take a position using your favorite entry system . The market starts to work in your favor and because you have put on a position with five contracts you quickly accumulate a profit of $750 . You are pleased and desire for more and that makes you want to grab profits quickly , especially as you see a slight retracement in the five minutes chart. But, understanding that market structure is always at play, you step backward for a short period and have a look at the daily and weekly charts. On your Drummond Geometry charts you can see fast that your entry was next to everyday and weekly support, at the bottom of the everyday envelope and close to the weekly envelope bottom too. You will see that the logical target of this initial move is at the daily PLDot some 9 full points away, and that the development of the five minutes bar with its slight retracement is entirely common and continue with the thought that the market has {further upside}. You set a price target at the daily resistance and make a warning to sound when that is filled , so that you are able to make money there. You can then further assess if the market will reverse and move backward to the first support level or pause and keep going to higher level of resistance.
One of the main points is that when researching market structure as opposed to arbitrary dollar value price aims you mostly take the control of what the market is doing. As a technical analysis explained course teaches, full control taken by you since you are aware of the structural objective always as the market goes between its higher time- period support and resistance levels.
