Reasons Why LEDs are bad?
I am putting together a packet explaining the disadvantages of LEDs in a situation where the LEDs would be used in lamp posts to light up a pathway.
I have done a little research already. I have found out 1) That LEDs are more expensive per lumen than normal lights. 2) LEDs only have a certain angle which does not spread out light well 3) LEDs are very sensitive and need special circuitry including resistors and regulators 4) LEDs do not work well in very hot or very cold climates.
I would like if someone could put other disadvantages to LEDs (For using in a lamppost for lighting a pathway).
If you're planning on debating the topic, you have an uphill battle.
Current state of the art white LEDs have an efficiency of about 40 lumens per watt. General purpose incandescent lamps have an efficiency that ranges between 8-16 lumens per watt. A typical CFL will give about 60-65 lumens per watt. That will fall off at low temperatures. You need to factor in your energy and maintenance costs and lamp life when determining overall expense.
The narrow beam spread of an LED may actually be a benefit when lighting a defined area such as a pathway. There's no point in having a source that converts electricity to light more efficiently if the light is going in the wrong direction. A decent reflector that is still economical to manufacture will be about 95% efficient, but that number falls off rapidly as it gets dirty or oxidizes. The percentage of traffic lights that use arrays of LEDs has been increasing each year because they are cost effective from an energy and maintenance viewpoint. Outdoor floodlights using multiple LEDs are coming into the marketplace. Obviously temperature is not a insurmountable problem. Neither is ballasting - whether it is through a simple resistor or a complex high efficiency switching regulator.
The main drawback to LED's is scalability and it's primarily a heat dissipation problem. Currently you won't find individual LED's that can run at more than a few watts.
For general purpose outdoor lighting where accurate color rendering isn't a factor High Pressure Sodium (HPS) is the most efficient source.
