Power Inverter to Grid Hookup?
Can I use a normal power inverter, 12VDC to 110V and just plug it into a house outlet, or will that burn my house down? hehe
I've read that a "Grid Tie In Inverter" is what I need, but is that a sales gimmick or what? It sounds legit since I would assume the voltage frequency needs to be matched between the house grid and the inverter, what say you?
Yes, you absolutely need a "grid tie inverter." For several reasons.
One - if power is out your inverter would be attempting to feed not just your house but any other houses on the same distribution transformer secondary. You don't want to do that,. You would even be exciting the primary in the distribution transformer. You REALLY don't want to do that.
Two - when a line worker disconnects power by flipping a disconnect on a pole, they expect the lines downstream to be without power. You would be sending dangerous power back into the lines. You could kill a line worker. I'm not joking - it's happened.
Three - when power comes back on your simple dumb inverter would be destroyed. I'm assuming you don't want that.
The grid tie inverter has a relay that isolates your house from the grid when the grid isn't supplying power, thus avoiding all of the above.
Now... it would be permissable, during a power outage, to pull your main breakers, and THEN connect your inverter...
But wait! there's more -
Four - you'd only be supplying half of your house, the half wired to the same leg as the outlet you happened to pick. If you have anything that runs on 240 plugged in and it happens to start automatically, all kinds of bad things can happen.
Five - unless you're really good about going around disconnecting things, the "parasitic" load in your house (various electric clocks, chargers, etc.) will take up a lot of your inverter's output.
