Digital multimeters as the name suggests are meters that perform multiple functions of ammeters, ohmmeters, voltmeters and provide results in digitalized format. They are nowadays used extensively in various auto repair and troubleshooting works.
Digital multimeters are very user friendly and in fact they can be used by anyone who is interested. This is unlike the analog multimeters, which were used only by professionals like electricians and engineers. But, nowadays these come with various user manuals for do it yourselfers (DIY), for auto repair and trouble shooting work at home. Digital multimeters are extensively used in testing for continuity these days. However, before using it for your purpose, it is always important to select the proper range for the test. If you wish to use it as voltmeter use it accordingly and so on. For example: If you are looking for a 15-volt result, select a meter range higher than 15 volts. For example, a 0 to 25 volt range would be best and so on. Hence, even for checking continuity set the dial for the appropriate function and then connect the lead. And accordingly if you hear a beep then it means there is continuity, while the absence of beep indicates no continuity.
Again, if you wish to monitor current and resistance, all you have to do is set the meter accordingly. It is seen that lower the range, the more precise is the reading similar to that of infrared thermometers. For changing the range all you have to do is simply move the decimal point over or back a space just like you do in digital pressure gauge.
Moreover for best results it is recommended that you select the range of precise measurement by deciding upon the placement of the decimal point for the best resolution ever. All these instructions are obviously available in any instruction manual making the use of digital multimeters a breeze.
