Is the New Electricity Smart (Dumb) Meter Faulty?
Is the New Electricity Smart (Dumb) Meter Faulty?
I can't come to any other conclusion than that the meter is defective or has been installed incorrectly. Where are all the whistle blowers in the retail electricity supply industry? I do not believe that no one knows the reason for all the billing mistakes being made in thousands of cases in Victoria Australia.
We live in a retirement village in Melbourne that installed 1.5 kilowatt solar panels on most of the buildings in an effort to reduce pollution and our power bills. The federal government initiative provided subsidised solar panels in an effort to reduce pollution and also offset the effects of the Global Financial Crisis. The idea was brilliant but like the governments other great scheme of providing subsidised roof insulation the implementation was less than perfect.
Why has the daily electricity usage increased from the same quarter of the previous year? We are not talking about the monetary bills or the peak or off peak power used, just the total daily consumption. In the last year most of the about 8 square units in the village have had low energy light globes installed and a 1.5 kilowatt solar panel installation. Wouldn't you expect that the electricity consumption would be substantially reduced?
How about explaining bills of $1300 $1600 and even $2000 for these small units with only one or two people in them. There are a number of different electricity retailers in the village all have had instances of absurd power usage and the only common factor is that all the residents have the new meters and the power wholesaler is Jemena.
Who decided on the new Dumb meter? Why would anyone want a meter that could not differentiate between off peak and peak power and not allow residents to be able to check their own usage? What is the big cover up? Why will no one agree that there is a problem?
The Federal and State Government ministers have been contacted as well as A Current Affair, Today Tonight, Today and Neal Mitchell, all were not interested, in fact Mitchell was the only one to even acknowledge the emails. Office employees of the State and Federal members of Parliament were contacted by phone and showed no interest in the problem. The Electricity Ombudsman has been contacted and is trying to broker reduction in bills but is not trying to fix the basic cause of the problem.
Because no one will acknowledge the problem we might have to guess that the powers know that the remedy could cost millions or billions and nobody wants to admit responsibility for such a major stuff up.
Somebody should tell the Melbourne Television Stations that there is an automated system of acknowledging receipt of emails that costs little and is a basic courtesy their viewers would appreciate. They must be getting thousands of ideas for articles and we know that all suggestions can not be used, just let us know the email has been received.
If somebody wants to invent some new swear words might I suggest calling someone a Bi-Directional Meter or a Smart Meter could be very effective. I would like to have a few new words to call the representatives of the electricity retailer I have spent hours on the phone listening to them give inane excuses for the rise in electricity consumption.
-
One of your appliances could be faulty. Is this likely in 100 different units with crazy bills.
-
It's been a very poor summer and your solar panels wouldn't generate as much.
-
It was a very cold winter and you used more heating.( the bill was for October- December)
-
You have new appliances. No again.
-
You have used more power at peak times. We are only talking about Total usage.
-
The cost of power has gone up. Again we are discussing total power usage.
In fairness to the reps they are probably instructed to not admit there is something wrong but it is very frustrating to be spending a lot of time talking to someone and logic is not acknowledged.
