Have i broken my microwave?
Put the metal grill plate in to do toast this morning, but forgot to press the grill button (oops) resulting in it just being on normal microwave mode. Went to the toilet and came back to a burning smell and smoke coming out of the roof of the microwave. I switched it off at the wall and haven't turned it back on again. Have i broken it by doing this? Will it still be safe to use? Thanks.
Most likely not... It is a great misnomer when people say you must never put metal objects into a microwave oven..
There are some metal objects that are perfectly safe, i.e. the plate stacker or the high rise grill..
The smoke and smell were almost certainly nothing more than the bread that got burnt..
Test the microwave by placing a glass/plastic jug, or a mug, of water inside it and power it up as normal for about 2 minutes, then test the water to see if it's warm.. If it is, the microwave is almost certainly OK.. If the water is cold, then the microwave oven is no longer producing microwaves (very unlikely to happen).. In any case, it's not going to go BANG, or do anything drastic..
If the Microwave oven does not even power up, then it is most likely that the fuse in the plug has failed.. In any event, if the microwave oven does not power up, or does not warm the water, it's probably not worth trying to get it repaired, unless it is a special model - such as a Panasonic 'inverter' combination oven, that costs an arm and a leg to buy.!
In reality, microwave ovens are fairly robust, and can tolerate a fair amount of abuse.. It just doesn't pay to push your luck, that's all..
On a final note, assuming it works, you may want to give it a good clean out, just to avoid your food being tainted with the taste of burnt bread.!!
