How Electric Cars Run
Electric cars are going to be seen more and more on roads and highways throughout the world in the future. There is real fascination about these cars; the media, car enthusiasts and the general consumer are all intrigued by these futuristic vehicles. This interest is mainly driven by environmental concerns. Manufacturers are producing vehicles that are designed to reduce CO2 emissions, such as the Colt Cleartec. Electric cars create less pollution than gasoline-powered cars and are an environmentally friendly alternative. However, how much do you know about these cars?
From the outside an electric car looks identical to a gas powered one. Much of the time electric cars are created by converting a gas powered car. This makes hard to tell the difference from the outside. When driving an electric car you will instantly be struck by the silence of the engine.

An electric car is runs from an electric motor rather than a gasoline engine. Under the bonnet there are a lot of differences between gasoline and electric cars. The heart of an electric car is made up of the electric motor, the motor controller and the batteries. The controller receives its power from the batteries and delivers it to the motor. The accelerator pedal is hooked up to a pair of resistors that provide a signal that tells the controller how much power it should deliver at a certain speed. Electric cars utilise AC (alternative current) or DC (direct current) motors.
The electric vehicle is powered by batteries and therefore requires a charging system to recharge the batteries. A charging system has two goals; firstly to pump electricity into the batteries and secondly to monitor the batteries in order to avoid damaging them during the charging process. As the presence of electric cars increases there will need to be a rethink about the best way to increase charging infrastructure.
Batteries must be regularly charged and this is done by taking electricity from the power grid. As the use of the electric car grows, it will be necessary to charge the vehicles at regular intervals. As a result a number of companies are devising schemes and new infrastructure for recharging. These include battery swap stations, high voltage recharging points and charging from home.
