Is there a cheap way to control electric motor speed?
DC, 20A motor, 18V supply.
Is there some sort of pre-made, inexpensive control unit that I can use to control the speed of this motor?
Pulse width modulation is the cheapest method of controlling the speed of AC or DC motors.
In your specific case use a 555 timer IC as an astable oscillator and feed the output of its pin3 to the base of a bipolar transistor of 20A or to the gate of a a MOSFET or IGBT of 20A. Change the pulse width of the output of the astable to obtain precise speed control.
