What is causing my jeep to idle erratic?
My 1989 Jeep Cherokee Laredo with 4.0, 4x4 idles very erratic after just a few minutes running. It will go to running rough and sounds like it is missing, then smooth out. Sometimes it will cut out. If I keep my foot in it she will keep running.
I have had a problem frequently having to jump start it. I put a multi - meter on the alternator and the volts will hold at 14.2 then drop to 2, 1, .01, 3, 5, all over the low end, then bounce back up.
Is the alt. cycling like this causing it to run erratic? I know the alt. and probably the bat. need replaced.
If you know the alternator and battery are failing, you may have diagnosed your own issue. If it were the vacuum lines. . . I'm not sure they'd coincide with the voltometer doing it's rollercoaster ride.
We drive a 92 Cherokee Laredo, but for the life of me I can't remember if it has an external voltage regulator or if it's in the brain. . . On the 89, find out of it has an external voltage regulator and if it does see if it's testable. I doubt that is is, but if it isn't your alternator or battery, I'd go there.
Back to our Cherokee. . . The altimeter on ours does a dance for us as well. But there hasn't been any issues attached to it (yet). Good luck to you!
