Why do all electronic meters have a metal foil pasted inside on the back cover?
If you open any small digital multimeter or any small equipment which has a plastic cover, it has a small aluminum foil pasted on inside of the back cover and when you put the cover in place the foil touches a spring soldered on the PCB ( printed circuit board ) of the meter. Thus the foil is connected to the ground line of the PCB through a foil. What is the function of this arrangement?
It is an electrostatic screen. It prevents electrical noise interfering with the electronics in the multimeter and it prevents noise from the digital circuits in the meter leaking out into the environment.
You probably would not find this in an older meter. Electrical screening in modern equipment is better because of stricter regulations on electromagnetic compatibility and higher clock frequencies in digital equipment.
