A digital multimeter and a true rms meter?
Whats the difference between a digital multimeter and a true rms meter? In what way the latter is superior than the first?
Unless the meter is labeled "true RMS" it is actually showing the average of the absolute value of an AC wave, scaled to be the same as the RMS value of the wave, if the wave happens to be a sine wave. If the wave shape is not a sine, then the result is inaccurate as either an average of absolute (because of the scaling) or RMS measurement (because it is not really the square Root of the Mean of the Square of the wave) . A true RMS meter actually squares the wave, averages that squared wave over some period of time and shows the square root of that average (Mean). The RMS value is the equivalent (in the sense of producing an similar power if applied to a resistance) DC voltage or current.
