Outdoor Light Electrical Problem?
I am installing an outdoor flood light but i am not putting it into the main wiring of the house, i am running it off a plug but i don't want to keep unplugging it every time i do not want it on, so i was wondering if i can put a switch in the line, so it goes from light, to switch then to plug socket. for more information it is a 3 core wire (standard) so has anyone got any idea's on what my options are please?
I take it that you live in the U.K. and that you want the switch at a more convenient place than the plug is. You will need to purchase a double pole switch, probably a 15 or 20 amp will be the easiest to come by and a plastic back box for it, any DIY store or electrical supplier will have these. Fix the back box in a suitable position and cut the lead for the light to suit, make sure you unplug it first.. Feed the two ends of the cable into the back box and remove the outer sheath, you now have six wires. The two earth wires go together in one of the earth connections, the blue and brown from the plug go seperately into the terminals marked incoming or feed and the blue and the brown going to the light go seperately into the terminals marked load or outgoing. Make sure your connections are tight and no bare wires are showing outside the terminals. Best of luck.
