FPE Clarlsville Tn News Group
Assuming that the circuits in your house were fed by a fuse box with screw (Edison base) fuses. It is possible I've seen these in some homes. You may also know about the common (but not certain) practices over merger (the installation of a fuse higher amperage) or put a penny in the fuse box behind the fuse. These measures were adopted to deal with the inconvenience of frequently blowing fuses in overloaded circuits, or to address the lack of a spare fuse.
Now, suppose that an inspector takes note of some more behind the merger and coins some fuses, and the waves of the warning signal that this is a dangerous situation - a "security flaw." Inspectors, electrical contractors, realtors and even agree that these conditions constitute a dangerous condition and must be corrected immediately. Red flag of the Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok ® panel is essentially the same warning is the exact equivalent of having more than one third of the fused circuits and / or coins a penny behind the fuse.
If you do not travel properly in the overload or short circuit the basic security flaw of FPE breakers. For example, if an overload or short circuit occurs in the dryer or the supply circuit, the trip switch is expected to open to minimize the resulting fire. But if it is an FPE Stab-Lok ® two-pole switch, extensive tests (PEF, CPSC, UL, and others) has shown that one can not Travel depend correctly. On the evidence of the CPSC, a substantial part of the two-pole FPE Stab-Lok ® machines, the kind that feed the dryer circuit, not working properly. An important part of them stuck and do not travel at all, no matter what current overload was applied. Additional test data also shows that there are problems with the FPE Stab-Lok ® single-pole switches and switch combination / GFI units.
This type of security flaw becomes important provided there is a short circuit or significant overload circuit downstream. Most of the switches in a house they never call the trip, and the perception of Homeownership is that "switches work well." The same general observation could be made if no switches (or fuses) at all, only wire system. In the case of a power failure, however, our security may depend on proper operation of circuit breakers.
In my own home, only two of the switches once soared by more than a quarter century of our occupation. I know nothing about the ability of any other to function properly, except they are a brand and type that has not been identified as having significant performance problems. No evidence suggests that it should be concerned about their ability to function properly. With FPE breakers, however, there is a significant amount of test data and other information available indicating a serious problem.
In addition, there are security problems in many of the pictures FPE (panels), in which the switches are installed. Some of the most common FPE Stab-Lok ® panels are prone to failure due to marginal interconnections between the components of current. Interconnections not overheating during charging intensive, and in the worst cases, a fire in the panel.1
The details of both the FPE Stab-Lok ® circuit breaker and performance FPE panel problems are provided in the following sections The conclusion is the following. based on the information available and the tests have been performed, no doubt, but that owners should be alerted to this safety defect and advised to have it corrected. Unless the tenant is willing to live with risk, the FPE Stab-Lok ® panels should be replaced.
