Since this is a mangled single-phase system, I'll do red phase, and you can use the method to determine blue & white phases.
First, note that there is some amount of measurement error in the numbers given above, simply because 8.4 kW, 5.4 kVAR, and 10.1 kVA don't perfectly match a right triangle.
Given the load of 8.4 kW, and a desired corrected power factor of 0.95 (inductive).
1. Calculate the final reactive power value:
Q_final = P * tan(acos(pf_initial))
8.4 * tan(acos(0.95)) = 8.4 * 0.32868 = 2.76 kVAR
2. With the initial reactive power of 5.4 kVAR, determine how much total correction to apply:
Q_correction = Q_initial - Q_final
Q_correction = 5.4 - 2.76 kVAR = 2.64 kVAR
3. Since it is a 6-step regulator, assume this means 6 steps per phase. Divide the required Q_correction into 6 equal steps.
Q_red_step = 2.64 / 6 = 0.44 kVAR per step.
Repeat for blue & white phases.
In real life, the problem is a bit more challenging because we don't normally correct each of the three phases independently.
So, the correction is not perfect for each phase, but the average is good enough.
