Power Transmission—Chain Drive
Chain drive can be used in a variety of machines such as bicycles and motorcycles. Addition to these machines, there are also many other vehicles which are also have requirements for the chain drive. Chain drive is a basic way of transmitting mechanical power from one place to another. As we can see, one of its main uses is to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle.
In the most situations, the power is conveyed by a roller chain which is also known as the drive chain or transmission chain. The roller chain involves the chain passing over a sprocket gear. And the teeth of the gear will mesh with the holes in the links of the chain. When the gear is turning, it pulls the chain putting mechanical force into the system.
Obviously, the roller chain is one of the main forms of chain drive. What can we learn about it? Of course, it is a very common chain that is used for transmission of mechanical power. Meanwhile, it is also a very efficient power transmission means. Actually, there are two types of links alternating in this roller chain. One is the inner links which have two inner plates held together by two sleeves or bushings. The other is the outer links which consists of two outer plates held together by pins passing through the bushings of the inner links. And the former type alternates with the later one.
As to its usage, roller chain is commonly used in the drilling equipment, construction machinery, and agricultural machinery, etc. Besides these machines, it can also be used to meet the requirement of some precise machines. One kind of the roller chain is a bicycle chain. It may have a master link, and the stronger and bigger chain can be applied in the motorcycle.
Chain drives are various. They are necessary parts for many industries. The different products can meet the needs of various machines. These machines can not function well without chain drives.
