What's the point of those ground leads on the oscilloscope probes?
it seems that you never need to connected them. I have never connecting them for anything I have used them for.
When do you ever use them?
Mike is correct. Try connecting them, you will probably see a change in the signal, unless you are working with low frequency large amplitude signals only.
Without using the ground clips, the only ground reference is via the green wire in the power cord, through the AC wiring, to the ground in the circuit you are measuring.
