Infant Hearing Tests
There is a permanent hearing loss in about 12,000 babies born each year in the United States. The National Center for Hearing Assessment and Management has data which shows a ratio of three babies for every 1,000 having hearing loss of some kind at birth, making this the most common birth defect.
Not being able to hear anything at all is not the only type of hearing loss because there are people who report partial hearing loss and are able to hear most of the commonly occurring sounds. A common remedy for hearing loss in children is a combination of therapy and hearing aids.
Cochlear implants are the only option in extreme cases. When a damaged part of the ear is unable to sense any sound even if amplified by a hearing aid, the auditory nerve is able to sense signals from the cochlear implants. 100 percent hearing is not yet possible even with these devices.
According to doctors, the best option is to screen babies as early after birth as possible. To enable babies to build their language skills, it is essential that therapies are started within the first few months.
Screening of newly born babies for hearing loss is now possible immediately after birth. If medical experts are able to detect hearing loss in babies within the first six months, the new procedures can ensure a near normal language development.
Detection of hearing loss in children usually happens around the age of 22 to 26 months. Many a times, hearing problems manifest as speech or language development problems.
Before newborn babies are discharged from the hospital, a new procedure allows screening them for hearing loss.
A newborn baby's hearing ability is determined by Otacoustic Emissions. A soft probe placed in the ear canal delivers sounds. An echo like sound created by the inner ear is picked up by a microphone which is embedded in the same probe. What used to take 10 minutes to screen each using a conventional procedure now takes merely 10 seconds.
Babies who fail the OAE test are administered the Auditory Brainstem Response test. The ABR test measures the auditory nerve's responses to sounds delivered to the baby's ears by a disposable earphone, by three throwaway electrodes placed on the baby's head and shoulders.
Each ear needs only 15 minutes to be screened in this manner.
These tests are run when the babies are asleep. Most parents realize speech related and language problems in their children around the age of 2 years and this leads them on to the underlying hearing problem.
To eliminate the chance of babies having problems after growing up, it is best to screen all of them. Children will be able to develop their language skills better and also lead near normal lives forever.
Only those babies who fail both these tests are referred to an audiologist for diagnostic testing. Roughly two percent of the babies need to be sent to an audiologist for diagnostic testing.
Amplifications are now available for infants as small as 2 to 3 months old. If these children get help very early on in their lives, they have a good chance of leading a normal life.
